Keeping up with the New ADA (American's with Disabilities Act) Regulations

This event is brought to you in partnership with the Hotel, Motel, Restaurant Association,
the MD Hotel and Lodging Association and The Greater Ocean City Chamber of Commerce.

Ensuring full access to your place of business is one great way to expand your customer base. Millions of people with disabilities travel regularly, and many do so with family, friends, and colleagues. Individuals with disabilities control $176 billion in discretionary income, and this figure does not even include the spending capabilities of their traveling companions. Older travelers and aging baby boomers also benefit from your business’ accessibility features.

Session 1: Serving Customers with Disabilities

This session will focus on how to successfully serve customers with disabilities. Participants will learn how to respectfully and effectively interact with people with various types of disabilities (people who are deaf or hard of hearing, people who are blind or have low vision, people with mobility impairments, cognitive disabilities, etc.). We will also discuss practical, positive strategies such as implementing staff training programs or establishing procedures to welcome customers with service animals. In addition, we will provide an overview of the ADA’s basic requirements.

Session 2: ADA and Lodging Update

This session is designed for hotel management and facilities personnel and will focus on new ADA regulations that are especially relevant for the lodging industry, including requirements which will go into effect March 15, 2012 for guest room reservation systems. Participants will also learn about the new ADA Design Standards and how they will affect construction, alterations, and barrier removal in existing facilities, including recreational spaces such as swimming pools and exercise equipment.
