The DOL?s New Overtime Rule & Paid Leave

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) exempts from overtime and minimum wage requirements certain employees who meet both a minimum salary requirement and a job duties requirement. This is often referred to as the ?white collar? exemption.
The current minimum salary requirement for the white collar exemption is $455 or more per week. However, on September 24, 2019, the Department of Labor (DOL) announced a new rule that (1) increases the minimum salary requirement, (2) increases the annual compensation component of the ?highly compensated employee? definition, and (3) makes other modifications to these rules.  This new rule went into effect on January 1, 2020.
Overtime and other wage and hour issues have fueled a dramatic escalation of claims against employers. The new DOL rule will only serve to accelerate this disturbing trend.

In light of this important new development, the Greater Ocean City Chamber of Commerce will be sponsoring a seminar on February 20, 2020 which is designed to help employers comply with the new law and protect themselves against costly wage and hour claims.

We will also be reviewing information on the Paid Leave regulations

Our guest speaker will be attorney Doug Desmarais from the law firm of Smith & Downey, P.A.
